Pictish backgrounds

D20 investigator backgrounds for the Liminal Horror TTRPG.

Designed to represent the people of Pictland in the late 7th century. Info from Carved in Stone: A Storyteller’s guide to Pictland which can be used as an excellent setting guide.

When creating a Pictish investigator use the normal Liminal Horror rules except your starting inventory is a satchel and travelling rations along with the equipment in your Pictish background.

  1. Beekeeper: Dried cow dung (bee smoke), fermented honey and heather (hallucogenic), beekeeper suit, skep (wicker beehive).
  2. Blacksmith: Tongs, hammers, clay, charcoal.
  3. Entertainer: Flute, wooden mask, face paints, flask of fire breathing oil.
  4. Fisher: Hook and line, net, knife (d6), worms.
  5. Fletcher: Gut string, glue, feathers, fletching knife (d6).
  6. Forager: Pestle and mortar, knife (d6), clover (soothes fevers and inflammation), sloke (aids with anaemia).
  7. Glassworker: Ceramic crucible, glass rods, iron rod, wooden shaping paddles.
  8. Healer: Poppy (painkiller and sleep aid), henbane (local anaesthetic when brewed), thread and needle, cloth bandages.
  9. Herder: Dog, shepherd’s crook (d6), knife (d6), straw hat.
  10. Hound: Padded tunic (+1 armor), parrying buckler (+1 armor), spear (d8, bulky), warhorn.
  11. Hunter: Light crossbow (d8), animal dung, wooden bird calling whistle, snare kit.
  12. Leatherworker: Neatsfoot oil, small knives (d6), stamps/punches, heavy-duty needle.
  13. Monk: Scribing tools, blessed quartzite, flask of holy water, holy text.
  14. Noble: Mirror and comb, Longbow (d8, bulky), wineskin, horse.
  15. Pathfinder: Quarterstaff (d6), flint and steel, torches, rain cloak.
  16. Peddler: Cart, oxen, lumber, silver brooch.
  17. Stonecarver: Chisels, hammer (d6), chalk, ogham belt.
  18. Tanner: Powdered lime (calcium hydroxide), thick leather gloves (+1 armor), wooden paddle, fleshing knife (d6).
  19. Weaver: Spindle, basket trap, linen threads, bundle of sticks and reeds.
  20. Woodworker: Coppicing axe (d6), drawknives, hand drills, linseed oil.
